Description

Aesthetician Labs (pronounced “es-the-tish-en”) is an artist-owned video game collective based out of lovely Rochester, NY. Our #1 goal is to make independent game development easier for our members.

History

Early history

The Aesthetician Labs team is made up of Sam Cammarata, Noah Ratcliff, and Aidan Markham. In early 2018, they were awarded first place in the New York State Game Dev Challenge for their Rochester-themed mobile arcade game, Crazy Platez. They used the award money to fund the development and launch of Crazy Platez, as well as to create Aesthetician Labs, LLC. Crazy Platez’s local success and popularity was also due in great part to a partnership with RIT’s MAGIC Spell studios, who helped support the team throughout development.

Crazy Platez

Crazy Platez was Aesthetician Labs’ foundational game. Development began in August 2017 at a game jam held by ROC Game Dev with the theme of “Rochester.” Over the course of that weekend, the first prototype was made, and the team continued development in their spare time between full-time classes at RIT. During development, team built a following in Rochester, showing the game at many local events. In spring 2018, the game won the New York State Game Dev Challenge student category, which provided funding for development and the founding of Aesthetician Labs. Partnering with RIT’s MAGIC Spell Studios, Aesthetician Labs worked full-time on Crazy Platez through fall-winter 2018 and released the game on Android and iOS in December.

Udder

Udder would be the next major title in Aesthetician Labs’ portfolio, a game about a legless cow running as fast and far as she can on her udders. It launched on web platform Poki in May 13, 2019.

Crazy Platez, Revisited

After a few months away working on other projects - including Udder- the team updated Crazy Platez for a partnership with Poki, which launched in June 24, 2019.

Into the future

AeLa’s goal moving into the future is to make bite-sized juicy games for web and mobile. The team’s inspiration comes from growing up in the golden age of Flash games, as well as over 5 years of experience in game jams like Ludum Dare.
